Ukrop’s hand off complete, bring on the booze on Sunday!

Ahold today announced that Giant-Carlisle, a Division of Ahold USA, has successfully completed the acquisition of 25 stores from Ukrop’s Super Markets, Inc.

We just got this from Giant/Martin’s PR rep:

Ahold today announced that Giant-Carlisle, a Division of Ahold USA, has successfully completed the acquisition of 25 stores from Ukrop’s Super Markets, Inc. This follows the agreement announced by Ahold in its press release issued on December 17, 2009.

Come springtime, the Ukrop’s name will be dropped and stores will be operating under the name “Martin’s.” Don’t worry, we’ll probably all still call them, Ukrop’s anyway.

And the big news:

Later this spring, stores will open on Sundays and sell carry-out beer and wine, similar to the nine MARTIN’S the chain currently operates in Virginia. As those or other changes are made,

Commence with the lamenting, rejoicing and/or messages of good riddance, etc…

  1. At least Mother Nature let Ukrop’s go out with a bang. Or series of three, snow-induced bangs.

  2. The “series of three, snow-induced bangs” will also be attributed to flooded emergency rooms in about nine months…

  3. Very true, Bradly. Some of you guys need to take a note from the Ukrop’s family playbook and learn when to pull out!

  4. Cool, open on Sundays and selling beer, that’s a start. Will they lower prices? Actually, for all that they may improve, I hope they will still have arthritis-ridden WWII vets to carry the lazy housewives’ groceries to their cars for them…

  5. Hear hear, Wolfie!

  6. People who ridiculed Ukrop’s for years by calling it “Ukrap’s” now have a new name to play with. Ahold’s purchase of Ukrop’s has opened up a whole new can of ridicule. Even more amusing, the company’s full name is Royal Ahold.

The thought of buying your groceries from a company called Ahold is probably why Ukrop’s will be renamed Martin’s. Since it’s a Dutch company, let’s hope they tell their new employees to wash their hands after putting their fingers in any dikes.

  7. Meade on said:

Im against the selling of beer! Being open on Sundays is bad enough- but why must they sell alcohol? You know what kinda folks that will bring in? Kroger’s is across the street. Let them go there. Oh, please, Richmond.

  8. #7 “You know what kinda folks that will bring in?”

Yeah, the same folk that have always patronized Ukrops, only now they can enjoy the convenience of one stop shopping.

  9. Might not be anything left of Ukrop’s by the time they take over. The stores are going downhill quality and service wise very quickly.
We’re starting to see bare shelves, something we’ve NEVER seen before in Ukrop’s.

  10. tvnewsbadge, that’s happens during a takeover.

  11. Ukrop’s didn’t sell alcohol but didn’t have any problem selling tobacco, which the World Health Organization estimates will kill a billion people in this century. Alcohol in moderation has been scientifically proven to have health benefits whereas it has been shown in clinical studies that even moderate smoking will harm your health.
