Good Morning, RVA: Snow business like snow business

Good morning, RVA! It’s 17 °F, and I’m currently operating under a one-hour snow delay. Today’s high is just above freezing, so with a little sunshine you might see some of this snow start to melt but the vast majority of it’s not going anywhere for a while. Keep your snow boots handy, because we won’t see temperatures over 32 °F until Saturday.
You knew this already, but most everything is closed today.
Water cooler
So much for 14 inches of snow, huh? I’m not going to complain about what we ended up with (which looks to be about six or seven inches from where I sit under several blankets), but I’m still a tiny bit disappointed. You can theoretically follow the status of the snowplows on this map as they try and dig us out of our winter wonderland.
The RTD’s Michael Paul Williams nails it this morning on the topic of school facility maintenance and repairs. I’m going to quote in full because he’s so dang right:
This is why it is imperative that the city take school facilities needs with the utmost seriousness. This means no more proposals for bogus state commissions that would kick the can of school maintenance two years down the road. Dispense with the go-it-alone effort to build a new ballpark; Richmond has no such luxury. Enlist private and suburban involvement in what should be a regional project anyway.
Ned Oliver over at Style Weekly looks into the possible retirement of the Department of Public Utilities’s Utility Buddy. Utility Buddy has long been a strange and familiar face in some of RVANews’s advertising, and I would be lying to myself if I said I wouldn’t miss the big guy. From the actress hired to play Utility Buddy: “Utility Buddy loves everybody…He high-fives grandmas, grandpas and everybody. He acts a little differently with teenagers. He’s cool with them. And anytime there’s music, he’s dancing.”
Bummer for coffee drinkers in Church Hill: GlobeHopper will close at the end of the month.

5 Bad American Habits I Kicked in Finland
Some parts of the world are different from America!
“Well, when I greet a colleague, I keep track,” she retorted, “so I don’t greet them again during the day!” Another chimed in, “That’s the same for me, too!”
Unbelievable, I thought. According to them, I’m too generous with my hellos.
When I told them I would do my best to greet them just once every day, they told me not to change my ways. They said they understood me. But the thing is, now that I’ve viewed myself from their perspective, I’m not sure I want to remain the same. Change isn’t a bad thing. And since moving to Finland two years ago, I’ve kicked a few bad American habits.
