Good Morning, RVA: PDFs, 4th Street Diner, Pleasants, and STEAM
A bit colder today, but plenty of sun to make up for it.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 49 °F. While temperatures won’t warm up as nice as yesterday, we’ll have plenty of sun to make up for it. At some point this week, you’re gonna have to remember to water your garden!

City Council met last night and did their thing–you can scroll back through #rvacouncil to get a feel for what went down. Of note: The PDF Ordinance™ (ORD. 2015-192, which I’ve talked about before) seemed dead in the water until it was rescued by the unlikely teamup of Councilman Jon Baliles and CAO Selena Cuffee-Glenn. Using reason and compromise, two things in short order the last time these cats talked about putting PDFs on the internet, they agreed to continue the ordinance and get together to discuss better strategies for increasing transparencies and meeting the spirit of the paper. I’ll tell you what, this is now the second live-action Council spat that Cuffee-Glenn has waded into (the first being BRT) and successfully chilled everyone the mess out.
Late last week, the mayor’s office sent out a press that said, in its entirety, “The first meeting of the Schools Investment Funding Program team will be held on Tuesday, March 29 at 9 a.m. at Richmond City Hall, 2nd Floor – Large Conference Room. The discussion will focus on how to develop a multi-year school investment funding plan.” That sounds great, if not slightly cryptic, but…too bad this week is spring break for RPS? And many of the folks who you’d like to be in attendance at a meeting like this already had other plans? Well, last night, the mayor’s office sent out another press release postponing the meeting until next week. Good news, but it’d be cool if all the people involved in building the future of our city could communicate directly, instead of through the media and press releases.
Just the other night, I wondered what would go into the old 4the Street Diner location. I hoped it’d be another all-night diner where my descendants could spend their formative years eating sweaty eggs and weird bacon. But, alas, Karri Peifer brings me back to reality and says the next tenant will offer the exact opposite.
Mark Robinson at Richmond Magazine writes this excellent post-apocalyptic obituary of Pleasants Hardware. It’s absolutely the perfect thing to read this morning while you drink your coffee, stare off into middle distance, and think about the brevity of life (as one does on Tuesday).
The deadline to submit an application to present at the girls-only Full STEAM Ahead conference is today–but don’t let that stop you from applying! If you’re a STEAM lady, take some time during lunch and submit an idea for a workshop.
