Good morning, RVA! It’s 71 °F, and you’re looking at a classic Richmond summer day filled with heat and humidity. Highs could hit 90 °F, so stay hydrated–especially if you’re spending the evening outside with your neighbors during National Night Out.

It’s National Night Out! A chance to hang out with your neighbors and build a relationship with the police officers who help keep your neighborhood safe. There’s about a billion and a half events going on across the city, so find one in your neighborhood.

Big beer news: looks like Stone Brewing Co. has narrowed the finalists for its East Coast brewing operation, and Richmond made the cut. City Council has called a special meeting today at 9:00 AM to fast track special-use permits for some property in the East End between the city and Rocketts Landing. Nooooooooo: Sugar Shack Donuts tip jar stolen.

Japan’s Studio Ghibli, which is responsible for just about every beautiful anime movie you’ve ever seen, announced that they’d be taking a short break to reassess things. Originally the story was reported as the studio would be closing forever, and I was filled with sad feelings.

Squirrels prodigally return home and face Binghamton tonight at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available online.
Nats fell to the Orioles, 7-3, move on to face the Mets today at 7:05 PM. The Nats maintain a three-game lead in the National League Eastern Division.
College football practice began yesterday. Texas A&M takes on South Carolina Thursday, August 28th in the 2014 season’s first major matchup.
VCU men’s basketball announced that the 2014-2015 home opener will feature Toledo on November 18th. The Rockets won 27 games last year.

Researchers at MIT, Microsoft, and Adobe have developed an algorithm that can reconstruct an audio signal by analyzing minute vibrations of objects depicted in video. In one set of experiments, they were able to recover intelligible speech from the vibrations of a potato-chip bag photographed from 15 feet away through soundproof glass.
