Good Morning, RVA: Easy Monday

This extra-late, extra-laid-back edition of Good Morning, RVA is brought to you by a Federal holiday.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 75 °F, and I hope you’re already having a relaxing Labor Day holiday. But maybe do that relaxing indoors? Highs today will hit the mid-90s, humidity will slowly diminish your sanity, and there’s a medium chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. Have fun out there!

Water cooler

If you’re looking for ways to spend your Labor Day, we’ve got five of ’em–and only one takes place outside / on the surface of the blazing sun.

The City will spend $250,000 on a new, massive, granite and steel sign for Carytown. The sign’s aesthetics matches that of Cary Court, and honestly, doesn’t look too bad. I’m sure People Have Opinions, though. They always do.

The RTD has a long look at Bus Rapid Transit and the possibility of it (eventually? finally?) coming to Richmond. Exciting stuff, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

Also from the RTD, an interview with RPS superintendent Dr. Bedden. It’s another example of the serious state of Richmond Public Schools and how brutally honest this dude can be–it’s a refreshing change of pace.

Sports!

  • Squirrels picked up three wins in the series against Binghamton. Today’s game at 12:05 PM is the last regular-season game. Tickets are available online.
  • Kickers battled to a 1-1 draw against Orange County Blues FC this past Saturday. They take on LA Galaxy II today at 10:00 PM.
  • Nats went 2-1 against the Mariners, start a series at the Dodgers today at 8:10 PM.
  • Hokies easily defeated FCS opponents William & Mary, 34-9.
  • Wahoos fell to #7 UCLA, in a surprisingly close game, 28-20.

YouTube’s Biggest Star Is An Unknown Toy-Reviewing Toddler Whisperer

All DisneyCollectorBR videos start the same way: A difficult-to-place, but seemingly non-American woman’s voice says, “Hey guys, Disney Collector here. Today I’m going to show you…” The woman, who shows only her brightly manicured hands, proceeds to introduce and open a children’s toy, many of them from recent Disney movies. She then demonstrates the toy’s features — what you might less clinically call “playing.” She regularly calls a toy’s features “adorable,” and tends to end her sentences with a singing inflection. In many videos, she also seems to make a deliberate effort to crinkle the toy’s packaging, to ear-pleasing effect. As far as plot goes, that’s about it.

DisneyCollectorBR’s most watched video, an unwrapping of “egg surprises” branded by Angry Birds, SpongeBob, and Cars, recently hit 90 million views. Five other videos have received over 40 million views, and another 15 have over 20 million.
