Richmond Proper: On honoring mothers

Though the consensus seems to be that you are only required to present a gift to the woman who birthed you on Mother’s Day, there are plenty of other mothers around who deserve some special attention too. Whether it’s sweets, a card, or just a simple “Happy Mother’s Day” when you see them, it’s worth recognizing all sorts of mothers who have made a difference in your life:

  • Your wife
  • Your grandmothers
  • Aunts you are particularly close with
  • New mothers
  • Your mother-in-law
  • A mother who will be alone for Mother’s Day, or who is having an especially rough time lately

As you honor these great women in your life, keep it focused and from the heart. Even Anna Jarvis, the woman who worked to popularize Mother’s Day in the US, eventually rejected the holiday because of its commercialization. When gift-giving on Mother’s Day, remember that your undivided attention and a good conversation go farther than a flashy, typical sort of gift. Don’t overdo it. Digitizing old family videos, buying her something unique and handmade, or offering to spend time with her doing a favorite activity of her choice will probably please her as much as the most expensive flower arrangement you can find.

And moms, here’s your chance to do some holiday good. Comment below and let us know about your all-time favorite Mother’s Day gifts!

  1. I think it’s also wonderful for mothers to honor their mom friends on Mother’s Day — we’ve got to help each other out!

Last Mother’s Day (my first one), I got to sleep in. That’s all I ever want in life, really.
