Today we published my article about urban backyard chickens. As it so happens, a Henrico woman was just issued a citation for keeping hens in her backyard. A building inspector noticed the hens and reported her. She now has until the weekend to get them off her property.

One of the people I spoke with for my article is urban hen advocate, Lisa Dearden. From the article:

“Chickens are the center of the local food movement,” said Dearden. She noted and that roughly 500 cities amended their ordinances to allow for hen ownership in 2011. Dearden believes that, should Richmond join that list, it would become a “more sustainable place to live.”

The article has received several comments. It’s definitely an issue people feel passionate about.
