2011 Garden Wars: Week 4

No elimination this week–or as we say in cornhole, “no blood”– so everyone can just freaking relax. Regardless, the veggies have flowed like veritable wine.

No elimination this week–or as we say in cornhole, “no blood”– so everyone can just freaking relax. Here’s the standings:

  • Sarah Milston (4)
  • Ryan Smartt (3)
  • Scott Pharr (2)
  • Jorge Salgado (1)

Sarah continues her complete and utter domination of the rest of the field. But! There is always this week for the guys to pick up their game (or to keep on losing, their choice!).

Ryan Smartt

The first tomatoes of the year. These guys look like they’re going to be long and lean–and way more tasty than Scott’s tomatoes. 100% Guaranteed.

This is the only time in the history of the world that a pug didn’t seem interested in food. But Deacon was definitely interested in this acorn squash I after I roasted it with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

Sarah Milston

Those of you who follow me on twitter already know that I had a major setback this week as a gaggle of squirrels (or other jealous Garden Wars participants) attacked my garden stealing cucumbers, all of the watermelons, and most of my tomatoes. I have a new plan of attack and will catch up soon. Evidently they don’t like greens or okra. We have enough kale to feed all of our neighbors and friends, and this week we have been harvesting a handful of green and red okra every day. They practically grow full size overnight!

Its like a cacophony of green! Lily Jaymes was pretty dismayed at all the rain this past week because it took one of her primary jobs away. But she decided the cabbage needed some more water. Pictured here are the green beans, cabbage, and curly kale.

— ∮∮∮ —

Jorge Salgado

This week…this caption came from one of the kids. I asked Josiah to say something about the spoils from the garden, so here it is (and who votes against children??):

“I’m excited that we grew them…we’ve never really grown anything before. I hope people vote for us.”

Sure, it’s not a veggie. It’s a sunflower. But we grew it, and they are a perfect addition to the garden. I know this guy (gal?) may not win us points, but we sure are proud of her (him). We may be on the brink of elimination, but dang it, we have our flowers.

— ∮∮∮ —

Scott Pharr

Squash bugs moved into my garden for another year, had lots of fun with their female friends, and BOOM! made a colony, a community, a metropolis! I could use pesticide, or I could…vacuum my garden!! Squash bugs really hate water, so give them a little drink, and they come right out. Then (I recommend a shop-vac) suck those suckers right up and toss them away – that’s what I call “organic”.

Meet Ellie. She eats just about any veggie (that has been seasoned and grilled) that she can get her mouth on. She’s special because she had cancer on her ear and had the whole ear removed! Thats right! Feel sorry for her! Vote for her! I mean, me!

I VOTE FOR THE HOG! I VOTE FOR THE HOG! (i.e. Deacon, which means I vote for Ryan Smartt.)

  2. Ray on said:

OK. So this is Gardens Wars? It looks more like Star Wars as that pug looks earily like Darth Vader eyeing the Death Star. Way to go Ryan, you have my vote because I LOVE acorn squash…especially with cinnamon and brown sugar. I expect a squash pie soon!

  3. Scott R on said:

Do I vote for the pug and acorn squash? Or a cool guy in a VT hat with a shop vac? This one is difficult. But, I have to go with VT this week. Scott’s got my vote this week!

  4. Sarah on said:

An adorable pug will get me anytime. I vote for Ryan Smartt!

  5. Paul Stephens on said:

Pharr would have received my vote had the actual squash bugs been shown as they sound very intriquing, but alas I can’t go against the Deac.

  6. Morgan Blake on said:

My vote goes to Ryan this week. How can I resist a Pug face?

  7. Deacon sealed it for me… casting my vote for Ryan!

  8. Lauren on said:

Vacuuming the garden. . . really . . . going with Pharr this week.

  9. Andrew on said:

Smartt! What a classic pug facial expression. I half expect it to start talking like that annoying dog in MIB…in which case you would lose my vote. Make sure he keeps his snark to himself and you’ll keep my vote.

  10. Michelle on said:

I think Deacon was interested in the squash, but he decided it looked like too much work. I vote for Ryan!

  11. Lynn on said:

I see that cute kid pics are being abandoned in favor of cute pet pics. It’s a tough one this week. I was sure the pug was going to get my vote until I saw Ellie. A dog with a sad story always wins for me. So, Scott! (The vacuum was pretty cool, too!)

  12. Pugs always get my vote! Go Deacon… I mean, Ryan!

  13. Kirsten on said:

    Pug + Squash = Victory. Go Deac(s)!

  14. Brian Forrester on said:

When you place a pug in the photo, it’s a no-brainer. HOG for the win!!

  15. Renee on said:

Black pugs have a special place in my heart (RIP Weasley), as do acorn squash. Smartt gets my vote this week.

  16. I like how everyone is pimping out their children or dogs for votes! I vote for the Salgados.

  17. Smartt! For the pug and the talking of smack!

  18. Jill on said:

Ryan gets my vote! Deacon’s cute face can’t lose! I do have to say how much I enjoy everyone’s photos and commentary each week…thanks for the entertainment at work!

  19. Wow, did you all get together to plan to post cute animals this week instead? Lots of strategery happening this week.

I have to vote for Jorge because of the colorful tomatoes, plea for help, and the great sunflower. (also, he spent 30 minutes last night trying to sell me on google+, so I appreciate his enthusiasm).

Shop vac in the garden was a close second though.

  20. Man, W.C. Fields wouldn’t know *who* to vote for in this war, so many dogs and kids everywhere!

I’m gonna go with Jorge. Sunflowers are so cheerful, and those ‘matoes are looking nice.

  21. I vote for Smartt for the exceptional quality of his photo of Deacon. And because dogs are kinda my thing right now. As is squash. All around win!

  22. Pharr! Shop-Vac Gardening!

  23. Carrie on said:

Scott: I find the use of the shop vac hilarious but also a good tip.

But did you really have to play the dog cancer card? SN: my bro’s lab used to eat cucumbers straight out of the garden raw, he LOVED them!

  24. Julie on said:

    Jorge all the way!!

  25. pharr! the man *vacuumed* bugs off his plants. that’s dedication. or complete karaziness. either way, he gets my vote!

  26. Jig on said:

I’m entertained by all, but casting a vote for Ryan Smartt!

  27. Lauren on said:

    Ear cancer? I vote Pharr

  28. Jim Schuyler on said:

Deacon and acorn squash are an unbeatable combination–Ryan Smartt is an easy vote this week!

  29. Lisa Rainey on said:

Vacuum the plants outside!!! I would bet a small fortune that he’s never used a vacuume INSIDE!! I’ll vote for Scott. Probably the last time we’ll see a vacuum in his hands.

  30. Pharr – only a man’s man would vacuum his garden

  31. Paula Hough on said:

Salgado’s sunflower. Also. Jorge: I have a cute dog and a cute baby if you need to double-down next week.

  32. Jennifer on said:

Pharr – for the shop vac extermination technique. I could sympathize about gross bugs — I had a massive green worm thingy devouring my little heirloom tomatoes this week. And while Deacon is beyond adorable, it’s Ellie who captured my heart this week. She is a regal, elegant and simply beautiful survivor.

  33. I feel compelled to vote for the pug named Deacon, but I have go to with Pharr for the vacuuming.

  34. Catherine on said:

Pharr. The shop vac won my vote this week.

  72. I vote for Smartt, because I’ve got a black pug as well. Though my Frankie isn’t quite as photogenic as Deacon, I think he’ll be welcoming one of the other garden warriors to the compost pile next week.

  73. Jenn Kyzer on said:

My vote for Scott is a sure thing this because of the dog!
