5 things

There was much handwringing and sleep lost over here as I tried to figure out which events to highlight this week. It was much like watching Joey hem and haw all those years on Dawson’s Creek. Dawson? Or Pacey? How does a girl choose? But alas, here they are. And one includes a pretty incredible giveaway.

1. Luck of the Draw & Musicircus

The Visual Arts Center of Richmond is hosting pretty much the best twofer ever. The evening starts with Luck of the Draw, a free event including a viewing of the Richard Carlyon exhibition and live music. You can also purchase a raffle ticket for $100 for a chance to take home unframed art donated by local artists and celebrities (including Noah Scalin of Skull-A-Day fame and John Bryan, president of Culture Works). The evening will then take quite a jazzy turn at 9:30 when Brian Jones’s much-anticipated Musicircus gets started up. (Read more about that over at RVAJazz.) Thursday, October 22nd, 6pm to 10:30pm, 1812 W. Main Street. Free to get in, raffle tickets cost $100. Call Karen Miller at 804-353-0094 x 227 to reserve tickets.

Now here’s where our giveaway comes in: we’ve got TWO raffle tickets to hand off. But since the event is tonight is tonight, we’ve got to have a quick turnaround. Go here to enter. We’ll choose the winners at 1pm TODAY. Quick! Go! We haven’t any time to dawdle!

2. Meadow Highland Games & Celtic Festival

Huge dudes in kilts throwing heavy stuff, lots and lots (and lots) of whiskey, Scottish dancing and music, a little shopping for authentic Celtic good, Richmonders talking like this guy all weekend because it’s the only frame of reference they have other than Sean Connery:

Yes, please. Saturday, October 24th 9am to 6pm and Sunday, October 25th, 9am to 5pm, The Meadow Event Park (exit 98, off of I-95), one day tickets are $19, weekend passes are $27. Purchase online before October 23rd and get $5 off your one day ticket.

3. Richmond Zombie Walk 2009

Legions of the undead will be stumbling through Carytown on Saturday, all to benefit the American Cancer Society. Join in on the gooey, crusty, limbs-falling-off fun by watching from the sidelines or dressing up yourself. Saturday, October 24th, pre-walk meet-up is at 1pm at Benedictine (N. Belmont and Hanover Avenue), walk begins at 2pm. Donations of $5 per participant are appreciated. (Gurgle, gurgle, braaaaaaaaaaaaaains.)

4. Young Frankenstein at The Byrd

Four words for you: Puttin’ on the Ritz. That’s all I will say. If you don’t understand what I mean, well then I just can’t talk to you anymore. At least until you see this movie. Sunday, October 25th, 1:30pm, 2908 W. Cary Street, $5 (benefiting The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk).

5. Balliceaux Buffet with Two-Man Bands

We love this event for two reasons: 1) Our very own Chris Bopst set it up and 2) it involves eating at Balliceaux, a restaurant quickly becoming a Richmond fave. In addition to what’s sure to be a stellar buffet, this family-friendly event will feature an opening performance from 13-year-old harpist Ian McVoy, followed by sets from Fuzzy Baby, Cigarbox Planetarium, and Two Man Gentelmen Band. Sunday, October 25th, 6pm, 203 N. Lombardy Street, $15 (covers food and music).

Don’t forget, there are also TONS of Halloween-type events going on this weekend. Check out our Halloween Guide for more details on those.

For more on what’s going on around the good ol’ RVA this weekend, check out our events calendar. And if you’ve got an event in the works that you’d like to see up there, send it our way.

As usual, if you’d like to give special shout-outs to happenings this weekend, leave them in the comments!

  1. Richmond Reptile Expo!
    Sunday 10am-3pm, Southside, $8, $3 kids 2-6.
Best place to buy / see a variety of reptiles. If you want a reptile, this is the cheapest place to get a quality one. Or just take the kids to see (and even hold) all kinds of fun stuff.
