1. Second City

If you’ve ever heard of…oh, anyone who’s a popular comic performer or writer at the moment, then you’ve mostly experienced a product of Chicago’s Second City improv group. Their show, “Second City Hits Home,” gives us the treat of hearing them riff on…our city!! Did you even know Chicago had HEARD of Richmond? It’s all very exciting.

2. Million Dollar Quartet

Fans of Jersey Boys or jukebox musicals in general will love Million Dollar Quartet, which imagines what would happen if Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash all got together and sang some tunes. OH WAIT! THEY DID! and now it’s a musical.

3. Freedom Classic Festival

It’s not just a thrilling basketball game between two historically black universities, it’s an entire festival devoted to that man among men, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There’s a ton of stuff going on for the whole family all weekend at this festival. And don’t worry, we’ll do a roundup of everything MLK Day related tomorrow, so you can plan out exactly how you and your family will celebrate a fantastic human being’s life and legacy.

4. The Rach 2

Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written (and a marvelous challenge for a pianist, thought not as much as its brother, the legendary Rach 3). If you see one piece of classical music played live in your entire life, it should be one of those concertos. I exaggerate not.

5. Richmond Jewish Food Festival

A delicious tradition, the Jewish Food Festival is back this year to serve up some dishes that it’s just not that easy to find in Richmond, Virginia. Our resident food-charmer, Stephanie Ganz, wrote a thing introducing those who are unfamiliar to Jewish food last year to get you started.
