5 Things

Celebrate the August that was with a weekend full of Things.

1. Mellow Gold release party

Tim Skirven, who may be the nicest bearded dude I’ve ever met (which is saying something in this town), celebrates the release of his new collection of art, Mellow Gold, tonight at Quirk Gallery. It’s also the last night of Tim’s show at Quirk, so stop by, hang out, and pick up some of his rad artwork. Also, may I recommend that you give him a follow on the Instagram?

  • Thursday, August 28th • 5:00 – 8:00 PM
  • Quirk Gallery, 311 W. Broad Street
  • Free! Although you can preorder Mellow Gold for $15 and pick it up at Quirk.

2. Flying Squirrels vs. Binghamton

As Jim Morrison once said, “Summer’s almost gone. Almost gone. Yeah, it’s almost gone. Where will we be…when the summer’s gone?” I’ll tell you where we won’t be: at The Diamond watching the Flying Squirrels, because Friday marks the beginning of their final home series.1 Tickets are cheap, and the experience is tops for both baby and bru alike. You’ve got no excuse! Go and root, root, root for the home team!

  • Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday; 7:05 PM, 6:05 PM, 1:35 PM, and 12:05 PM respectively.
  • The Diamond
  • Tickets start at just $7

3. Eric Litwin aka the Pete the Cat guy

This guy is a Big Deal among the diapered set:

  • Friday, August 29th
  • CMoR Central, 262 W. Broad Street
  • Free! But bring some bucks for food trucks and books.

4. Beneath Richmond’s Pavement

RVA Archaeology helps Richmond-area youngsters fulfill their dreams of becoming Indiana Jones when they grow up, and this Saturday they’re hosting an “introduction to archaeology.” OK fine, that first part’s not true, but I suppose learning about archaeology is a good place to start if you’d like a career in professional adventuring. This Saturday, Taft Kiser will speak about urban archaeology and six excavation performed in the city. Attendees must provide their own hats and whips.

  • Saturday, August 30th • 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
  • Richmond Public Library, 101 E. Franklin Street
  • Free!

5. Play pool at Greenleaf’s

Is there a difference between pool and billiards? I’m sure a British person could tell us.2 Anyway, this weekend you can play both pool and billiards (assuming they’re different games), at Greenleaf’s, which just opened down on Sixth and Franklin. Richmond’s been (presumably) missing a decent poolhall for awhile now, and Greenleaf’s fills this void nicely. They’ve got a ton of tables, so grab your friends and knock some balls around.

  • Whenever!
  • The ground floor of the John Marshall, at the corner of Sixth and Franklin.
  • Prices vary

  1. Since the Squirrels have secured a spot in the playoffs, there should be a few more postseason games at the Diamond. I’d like to tell you for sure but the playoff format is nearly unparsable by regular humans like myself.
  2. Is there a difference between a British person and an English person?
