5 things
While I’m sure you all will be quite busy with your various merry-making activities this weekend, here are 5 events happening around town should you be looking for something to get you out of the house once the wrapping paper is cleaned up.
While I’m sure you all will be quite busy with your various merry-making activities this weekend, here are 5 events happening around town should you be looking for something to get you out of the house once the wrapping paper is cleaned up.
1. RVA on Ice
Oh if only (if only!) this were something akin to Disney on Ice. But alas, I guess we’ll just have to settle for an ice skating rink. The grand opening was yesterday and folks are all atwitter about it — sure to be fun for the whole fam.
- Hours vary, so see this post for details
- Adjacent to Richmond CenterStage (at 6th & Broad Streets, on the Broad Street side)
- $5 for general admission ($4 for seniors and military; kids under 10 are free); skate rental is $5 for adults and $3 for kids
2. Movies & Mimosas: Miracle on 34th Street
The prospect of seeing this Christmas classic on the big screen is making me feel feelings. Plus, today’s kid stars have got NOTHING on a young Natalie Wood.
- Saturday, December 25 and Sunday, December 26 (doors open at 10:30am, movie starts at 11am)
- Movieland (1301 N. Boulevard)
- $5.50 ($4.50 with your Criterion Club card)
3. Christmas Day at the VMFA
This sounds like such a lovely option for those looking to do something different on Christmas. While the VMFA’s general galleries are always free, on Christmas Day they’re offering free admission to two of their special exhibits: American Quilts: Selections from the Winterthur Collection (regularly $15 per person) and Sally Mann: The Flesh and The Spirit (regularly $10 per person). VMFA’s Amuse restaurant will also be serving a special Christmas Day menu.
- Saturday, December 15 (noon to 5pm)
- Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (200 N. Boulevard)
- Free!
4. Christmas Night at Patrick Henry’s Pub
Some of you might be in the market for some spirits after a day spent with your nearest and dearest. Patrick Henry’s Pub in Church Hill will be there for you, friends. (Of course, please drink/act responsibly while you’re out and about.)
- Saturday, December 25 (8pm to 2am)
- Patrick Henry’s Pub (2300 E. Broad Street)
- No cover
5. Holiday Glitter: Monument Avenue After Dark Walking Tour
If you tend to get a little bummed once Christmas is over (like I do), the Valentine Richmond History Center has come to the rescue! Take part in their most popular walking tour and enjoy the lights and glitter of Monument Avenue while it’s still decked out for the holidays.
- Sunday, December 26 (6pm) and Monday, December 27 (7:30pm)
- Meet at the Lee Monument at Allen Street and Monument Avenue
- $10 (Call 804-649-0711 x 301 for details)
Keep in mind, these events are just a snippet of the fun happening in RVA this weekend. Stop by our Events Calendar or our list of Holiday Events to see what else is going on.
Feel free to leave shout-outs for other events in the comments while you’re here.

While it looks as though we may not have to “dream” of a White Christmas, the live musical based on the movie is still playing downtown at the Empire Theatre until January 9th. (With Valet Parking!) Also playing at the Historic Hanover Tavern is the musical comedy Nunsense. Both White Christmas and Nunsense are great for families, have seats available and performances December 26th at 2pm. Beat the post-holiday blues! tickets and info at 282-2620.
Besides the following that I know of: What restaurants are open Christmas?
Bistro Bouchon, Republic, Patrtick Henry’s Pub and the Museum.
