LISTEN: 12 minutes with Nancy Davies

The now-retired founder of the Orchard House School founder reflects and educates—at the same time!

The second in our YWCA Outstanding Women Awards series, Nancy Davies has had the exhausting yet inspiring career of founding the Orchard House School. Orchard House is based on a leadership/fellowship model that encourages middle school-aged girls to be themselves while being a strong part of a community.

Nancy’s views are truly relatable–if you’ve ever been a 13-year-old girl, you know that it’s not an easy time. And the things she said to me on her back porch last week (yes, those are wind chimes and birds you hear, it was magical) spoke to memories of mine I’d really have preferred to forget. Adolescence, man!

Here’s 12 minutes with Nancy Davies, during which you’ll hear what it’s like to start an entire school, how she got into education in the first place, and what’s so dang special about the minds of young teenage girls.

For a similarly thoughtful and supportive approach to middle school education for boys here in Richmond, have a look at Seven Hills School(www.7hillsschool.org)

  2. @Kate – We actually did talk about Seven Hills offline! I have a son and she highly recommended it!
