Virginia Commonwealth University has recently announced a special guest artist clinic with vibraphonist Stefon Harris. Harris will lead the master class on January 28 from noon until 2 in the Performing Arts Center on the VCU campus.

Although the master class will be hosted by VCU Percussion, it will likely be open to the public. If not, however, there is still a chance to catch Harris with the Turtle Island String Quartet at the University of Richmond’s Modlin Center for the Arts. In a recent release by the Turtle Island String Quartet titled A Love Supreme, the group sandwiches Coltrane’s famous suite between other Coltrane tunes. The quartet has been widely praised for its performance on the classic ballad “Naima,” which Downbeat ventured to say evokes “the inherent beauty and poignancy of the piece.” Two days later, on the 30th, the group will perform in Hampton , Va.

Harris received his B.A. in Classical Music, followed by his M.A. in Jazz Performance from Manhattan School of Music. Aside from leading his own bands, he has become a sought after sideman, touring with the likes of Joe Henderson, Kenny Barron and Wynton Marsalis, and recording albums with everyone from The Classical Jazz Quartet to Mark Shim.

The clinic itself will probably focus primarily on classical vibraphone and mallet technique, but is certain to touch on jazz improvisation as well.
