The Times-Dispatch has a soft political piece this weekend on a group of new mothers who have been canvassing the Fan and Northside with their children on behalf of Barack Obama. “Mamas for Obama” formed from a prenatal yoga class:

The “Mamas for Obama” have hit the streets in force, towing toddlers in strollers and babies in backpacks, pushing Obama’s message of change, between diaper changes.

“We’re here because of them,” says Boyd, who teaches philosophy at John Tyler Community College. She canvassed along Hanover Street in the Fan the other day, with Obama’s face on her front and Ava on her back.

The local “Mamas” group grew out of a prenatal yoga class. Working with the Obama campaign, they held a rally in Byrd Park in early September that drew 400 people. They hit the streets of the Fan and Richmond’s North Side shortly afterward, armed with voter lists, literature, baby goldfish and plenty of diapers.

The Mamas travel in pairs of two or three, with one minding the strollers while the others knock on doors.

“Getting multiple strollers together makes you seem like a pack,” says Boyd.

The group has grown to about 20, with 10 regular participants. In recent days it has switched to get out the vote mode, making sure supporters turn out on Election Day.

The group rolls in the afternoons – after play dates, before supper, and, if they’re lucky, during nap time. Mostly they find seniors and retired people at home, the majority of whom are thrilled to see a baby.
