NOVA swimmers take second place at national championships

Combined men’s senior team places fifth overall at national summer competition.

NOVA of Virginia Aquatics’ senior men completed the five day National Club Swimming Association Summer 2014 Junior National Championship in second place. NOVA’s men competed without standouts Townley Haas, Steffen Erickson and Ted Schubert, who were in Irvine, California at the USA Junior National Swimming Championships. Overall, the team placed 5th in combined scoring, the highest finish of any Virginia Swimming team.

NOVA’s top individual finishers were Wade O’Brien, who placed second in the 200 meter Backstroke with a time of 2:02.98 and third in the 100 meter Backstroke (57.74); Charlie Swanson, who took second place in the 200 meter Breaststroke (2:19.26); and Jac Cortright, who also placed second in the 400 meter Freestyle (4:02.47). Swanson broke the existing Virginia Swimming record in the 200 meter Breaststroke by 1.5 seconds.

NOVA relays also played a significant role in the second place finish, capped by a gold medal win with a time of 3:52.18 in the 4×100 meter Medley Relay (O’Brien, Swanson, Aaron Schultz and Luke Martin) on the final day of competition. Of special note, the 400 meter Medley Relay consisting of Sam Cuthbert, Vincent Hou, Will Riggs and Jacob Johnson broke the Virginia Swimming 15-16 boys’ record.
