Healthy Corner Store Initiative ribbon cutting ceremonies next Friday

Councilwoman Newbille invites East End residents to attend.

Councilwoman Cynthia Newbille has extended an invitation to East End residents to attend two ribbon cutting ceremonies on Friday, June 20.

The event is actually a group venture between Cynthia Newbille of the 7th Voter District, Councilwoman Ellen Roberts of the 6th Voter District, and Tricycle Gardens to celebrate two additions to “Get Fresh East End! Healthy Corner Store”, a program which aims to bring healthy, fresh foods to city residents in need.

From Tricycle Garden’s website:

The Get Fresh! Healthy Corner Store Initiative, modeled after the national Healthy Corner Stores Initiative, will increase community access to fresh, affordable, locally grown produce through neighborhood corner stores in Richmond, VA.

The first ceremony will take place at 11:00 AM from 1:00 PM at Song’s Market, located at 1400 Mechanicsville Turnpike. The second ceremony will take place from 2:30 to 4:30 PM at Fine Foods, located at 4904 Government Road.

These ceremonies will include:

Virginia Governor’s Executive Mansion Executive Chef, Chris Blain; Youth Health Equity Leadership Institute members; and, Neighborhood Resource Center Food Landscape students will demonstrate healthy cooking tips and techniques in the Bon Secours Health System “Class-A-Roll” Mobile Kitchen.

In order to take part in the The Healthy Corner Store Initiative, both Song’s Market and Fine Foods agreed to provide fresh foods, food education offerings, and local produce.
