From PCPS’ Cliff Davis, re: the most recent school board meeting: The Board of the Petersburg City Public Schools tonight approved a new partnership with the Crater Area Health District, after a presentation by Dr. Patricia Radcliffe, Director of Special Education and Pupil Personnel for the Petersburg City Public Schools; and Dr. Kay Rankin, Health Director of the Crater Health District. The Crater Health District will send a registered nurse into the Petersburg City Public Schools, for a half-day per week, to be available to talk with students and promote health issues. He or she will not dispense medication or make a diagnosis, but will seek to answer questions that students may have.

“It’s about prevention,” Dr. Rankin said.

If a grant is approved that the Crater Health District is seeking, a full-time registered nurse could be made available to the school district, she added.

In other business from the Board, Dr. Patrick Bingham, Petersburg Schools Director of Human Resources, announced that the district is down to “single digits” in the number of teaching positions left to fill in the school district.

There are 13 such positions still left to fill, compared to 25 at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, and more than 60 that had been vacant in June of this year. A strong effort has also been made to fill positions with highly qualified teachers, not long-term substitutes.

“We have done a quality job of finding individuals to teach our children this year,” said Dr. James Victory, Superintendent of Petersburg City Public Schools.
