This week, two plays that take place in the middle of the 20th century.
5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche

It’s 1956, and the double threat of Communism and the atomic bomb loom large. The Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein, all self-described widows, are having their annual quiche breakfast and presentation. Society members include the entire audience, who will be given name tags to prove it. Will they be able to keep their cool when Communists threaten their idyllic town?
Atlanta Theater Buzz says “the raucously off-kilter humor never obscures the more serious grace notes and sub-texts… It is silly, it is rude, it is laugh-out-loud funny, and it’s all over too soon.”
The Chicago Tribune raves that the show “dishes up high-spirited theatrical comfort food with a bit of a saucy kick.”
No meat, no men, all manners. Respect the egg!
Caroline, Or Change

It’s 1963. Caroline is an African American laundress, a single mother serving a family in the Deep South. As the socio-political world violently spins into a new order, Caroline’s faith and relationships are tested, but through her sacrifices, the depth of human bonds endures. Kushner and Tesori’s Tony Award-nominated musical is an inspired amalgam of blues, gospel and traditional Jewish melodies.
