FALL LINE FEST announces art exhibits

The music, art, and food festival will featuring a local muralist, an art installation using PODS storage containers, and individual exhibits across several local galleries.

Organizers of this year’s FALL LINE FEST announced yesterday the art exhibits that will be featured during the upcoming two-day festival. Among them are an audio-visual installation at the future site of VCU’s Institute for Contemporary Art, a mural by HAM?, select gallery shows, and more. You can read the release below.

Advance weekend passes, as well as day passes, for FALL LINE FEST are still available for $20 and $15, respectively. A weekend pass gives the holder admission to every FALL LINE FEST event and show. Art shows are free.

We’re also giving away two free tickets to the festival.

The organizers of the new Fall Line Fest, September 6 and 7, 2013 in downtown Richmond, announced today the highlights of their visual art-related offerings. All Fall Line Fest art shows are free and open to the public.

VCU ICA Exhibit

Virginia Commonwealth University’s Institute for Contemporary Art will feature a limited run of the 4-channel video “Synaptic Bliss” by
pioneering video artists Aziz + Cucher. “Synaptic Bliss” will be
installed on four screens playing simultaneously and set within PODS storage cubes on the site of the future ICA. An AstroTurf viewing area will be set up in front of the works. Hinting at its future role in the community as a place for the exchange of ideas, the ICA site will serve as a gathering spot for Fall Line Fest Friday afternoon and all day Saturday with food and beverage trucks situated on the site.

HAM? Mural

Fall Line Fest is thrilled to feature a new large scale mural by local
muralist Ham? in the center of RVA’s Arts District. Scaling the Emrick Flats building, once a Chevrolet dealership, now a slick luxury condominium, Ham? plans to meld the storied history of the building with the rich current culture of the neighborhood.
Visit 310 N. Adams Street all day Friday and Saturday as Ham? puts the finishing touches on his large scale public art.

LOVE Sculpture

Local artist volunteers teamed up to build a colorful sculpture that
speaks to the impetus for Fall Line Fest– a love for the community.
Inspired by the Virginia is for Lovers campaign, the public art
display plays on the color scheme of the Fall Line Fest logo. Look for
it around downtown Richmond before and during the Fest, take a photo to remember the weekend.

Gallery Shows

Friday, September 6 from 5-9 pm is Richmond’s First Fridays. The
monthly celebration of RVA’s arts district is an ideal way to warm up
for a weekend of art, music and food. Galleries and spaces are open to the public Friday and Saturday and are displaying special shows and premier artists Fall Line Fest weekend, including:

Candela Books and Gallery presents Courtney Johnson’s “Light Lure,” a display of large-scale underwater pinhole photographs made at each of the 19 fishing piers along the North Carolina coast, capturing some of our favorite beach vacation spots in an intensely beautiful and challenging way.

1708 Gallery will merge the food and art aspects of Fall Line Fest
with their groundbreaking FEED2013. The international juried biennial show captures art’s ability to satiate our souls and is curated by Sarah Eckhardt, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and Corin Hewitt, Assistant Professor, Sculpture and Extended Media, Virginia Commonwealth University.

At Art 180’s Atlas Gallery, professional and student artists have
joined forces for Fall Line Fest to create visual art on a music
medium. “Guitart” will premier Fall Line Fest weekend. Seventeen
professional artists and young people will display paintings, each
done on the lid of a guitar case. Many of the artists are also
celebrated musicians, including Ed Trask, Noah Scalin, Jack Oliver,
Mikemetic, Jonathan Vassar, and some surprises.

At the LoveRVA space, Fall Line Fest will pair a visual art show with a music show. Come see how each art form changes as a result. Motley musical artists Richmanian Ramblers, DJ Mikemetic, Black Liquid, Rattlemouth, and Leverage Models will rattle the art of photographer, painter, medium-buster, James Walker.

Quirk Gallery will show two local artists during Fall Line Fest: Kendra Dawn Wadsworth and El Kamino. Wadsworth’s paintings have been featured in solo and group shows throughout the country. Notably, she designed and executed all of the installation art work for the Academy Award winning film, “A Beautiful Mind”. Raised in the suburbs of Richmond, El Kamino started wall painting/graffiti as a teenager, before landing in art school at VCU. He has recently completed high profile commissions for Converse and the 2012 RVA Street Art Festival, where his “Richmond” piece on the Canal Walk remains a popular photo spot.

ADA Gallery presents the Electric Football Game Art Show, featuring
game boards, figures and teams from the popular 20th century board game. Look for archival items and present day creations from artists around the country. The show was curated by RVA music luminary Chris Bopst.

Fall Line Fest is a two day celebration of the music, art, and food
scene of downtown Richmond, VA. Organized by volunteers, the Fest will showcase local and nationally recognized musicians, visual artists, chefs, and restaurateurs, all in a walkable portion of Richmond’s Arts District.
