Dixie Chicken closes, Jorge does lunch, and Cous Cous becomes The Well

A new pizza place heads to Carytown while another looks to expand in Shockoe, some of the best chicken goes away on Friday, and we learn a little more about a new brewery.

We broke the news on Sunday that Dixie Chicken will close both its storefront and its food truck on Friday after it opened just one year ago in Forest Hill. Owner Shelia Wilkins said, “We’re not making enough money to pay the bills. It’s really disheartening, because we have really good food, but we don’t have the customers here.” You have today and tomorrow to get some of Richmond’s best fried chicken before its doors close for good. You can read more about the closing here.

Cous Cous closed its doors in March, but it’ll soon be reopening with a new name: The Well. According to Richmond.com, the new menu will have soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, desserts, and a bar menu full of classic cocktails and house drinks. Owners envision The Well as a neighborhood spot where people can count on good food and drink. We’ll keep you posted on its opening.

Mellow Mushroom, the Atlanta-based pizza company, will open in Carytown on May 20th. Its menu is a plethora of pizzas, sandwiches, calzones, salads, and of course brews! Gluten-free dough is available, along with a good amount of vegan options. It’ll be located in the former Plan 9 spot at 3012 W. Cary Street.

Speaking of pizza, Sette looks to expand in the next month or two. The pizza place located at 7 N. 23rd Street in Shockoe Bottom plans to take over its neighboring space, as well as install 20 taps. More pizza and beers for everyone!

Strangeways Brewing is getting closer to opening. Its owner confirmed via Richmond Bizsense that Brown Distributing will be its distributor, making Brown’s hold on the local craft beer market even stronger. No word yet on what Strangeways’ first round of beers will be, or even when it’ll open. But the brewery has a very active Facebook page if you want to keep your eye on it.
