CAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week: Eric Maynor averaged 28.0 points, 4.7 assists and 2.0 steals in VCU’s three games last week. The senior guard poured in a career-high 35 points at East Carolina and then earned all-tournament honors at the Cancun Challenge after scoring 18 points in a win over New Mexico and 31 points in a loss to Vanderbilt. For the week, Maynor shot 55.8% from the floor and 44% from 3-point range.

Conference Play Starts Saturday: All 12 CAA teams will open conference play this Saturday. James Madison hosts Northeastern at 11 a.m. in a game televised by Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, Philadelphia and New England, while CN8 will televise George Mason at Drexel at 4:30 p.m. Also on the slate, Delaware travels to Old Dominion for a 4 p.m. contest, while at 7 p.m., UNC Wilmington entertains Georgia State, Hofstra visits Towson and William & Mary welcomes VCU.

CAA Solid In Non-Conference Action: The CAA is off to a 34-33 start (.507) against non-conference competition during the early part of the regular season. Of the 34 victories, 17 have come on either neutral or road courts, including Northeastern’s 70-66 win at Providence. Thirteen losses have come against teams from the Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, SEC or ACC.

Young Guns: Young players are making an impact offensively in the CAA this season as there are only three seniors among the league’s top 15 in scoring. Three of the league’s top five scorers are sophomores – Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins (23.6 ppg), UNCW’s Chad Tomko (19.3 ppg) and Delaware’s Alphonso Dawson (19.2 ppg). Among the top 15 in points, there are six juniors, five sophomores, three seniors and one freshman.

Three CAA Players Among Top 31 In Scoring: VCU’s Eric Maynor (24.5 ppg/7th), Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins (23.6 ppg/11th) and W&M’s Danny Sumner (20.7 ppg/31st) are ranked among the top 31 in Division I in scoring according to the latest NCAA statistics through games of Nov. 30. In other individual categories, Delaware’s Marc Egerson is seventh nationally in rebounding (11.7 rpg), VCU’s Larry Sanders is ninth in blocks (3.7 bpg) and W&M’s David Schneider is 11th in threes made per game (3.9). A complete listing of CAA teams and players in the national stats is included on page 7 of this release.

Piling Up The Points: Six CAA players have already scored 30 or more points in the first month of the regular season after just seven reached the 30-point mark all of last year. VCU’s Eric Maynor topped the 30-point plateau twice last week, including a career-high 35 points at East Carolina. William & Mary’s David Schneider (31) and Danny Sumner (30) became just the second duo in school history to reach the mark in the same game on Nov. 22 against Navy. Also scoring 30 or more this season have been UNCW’s Chad Tomko, Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins and Delaware’s Jawan Carter.

Working Overtime: CAA teams have already been involved in 10 overtime contests this season and are 4-6 in those games. There have also been 24 games decided by six points or less or in overtime thus far, and the conference has a combined record of 12-12 in those games.

Bombs Away: William & Mary set a school and CAA record with 46 three-point attempts in a double-overtime loss at Liberty last Saturday. Junior guard David Schneider also broke school and CAA marks for treys attempted by a player as he launched 23 threes against the Flames. For the season, Schneider leads the league with 3.9 three-pointers made per game.

Two CAA Teams In Mid-Major Top 25 Poll: Two CAA teams are ranked in the latest Mid-Major Top 25 poll released by CollegeInsider.com on Dec. 1. VCU is ranked #11 this week, while George Mason moved into the poll at #13. Old Dominion, Hofstra, Northeastern and Towson were among other teams receiving votes.

Double Digits Streak Alive: Two CAA players are riding lengthy double-figure scoring streaks. VCU guard Eric Maynor has tallied double figures in 22 games in a row and Hofstra guard Charles Jenkins has scored double figures in 20 straight games. Northeastern guard Matt Janning had his 24-game streak of scoring double digits come to an end in a loss at South Florida on Saturday. (more…)
