Two acclaimed authors will be featured during Friday for the Arts! on November 14th in historic Petersburg. Nancy Carter Crump and Henry Kidd will be hosted at the Siege Museum, providing brief presentations at 6:15pm and 7:00pm, respectively, in addition to book signing opportunities.
Nancy Carter Crump, a former resident of Petersburg who now resides in Staunton, has recently released an expanded edition of her culinary book Hearthside Cooking: Early American Southern Cuisine Updated for Today’s Hearth and Cookstove. Hearthside Cooking, which was first published in 1986, has become a standard guide for museum interpreters and guides, culinary historians, historical re-enactors, in addition to campers, scouts and home cooks interested in period food and experimenting with new recipes and techniques. The book contains authentic recipes for more than 250 historic dishes, including breads, soups, entrees, cakes, custards, sauces and much more! Ms. Crump provides two sets of instructions so that dishes can be prepared over open fire or using modern kitchen appliances. With this new edition, she includes information on African American period foods, how the Civil War affected traditional southern food customs, and the late nineteenth-century transition from hearth to stove cooking.
Nancy Carter Crump is a culinary historian and founder of the Culinary Historians of Virginia. She is a frequent lecturer at historic sites and other venues throughout the South.
Henry Kidd, a life long resident of Colonial Heights, has written a historical novel entitled Petersburg, War on the Doorsteps where all the history is true. He writes of the numerous battles fought throughout the Petersburg area during the War Between the States. Whenever possible, he uses quotes or veterans recollections of conversations to enhance the story’s accuracy. This novel helps one understand not only the historical facts of the time period, but the people who lived and died during the war. All of Petersburg’s men, women, and children found their lives changed forever by the events that took place in the summer of 1864. The book is the culmination of a life-long study of the Battle of the Crater and the individuals it touched.
Mr. Kidd is not only an author but also a nationally recognized artist and humanitarian whose artistic talent covers two icons of America in Tragedy – The War Between the States and the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
