The Friends of Bryan Park, arborist Joel Koci and the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities will present a workshop on the updated and correct way to plant a tree. Current practices that involve planting the root ball or container even with ground level leads to weak, short lived specimens.

Koci, a certified arborist who holds a Masters in Ornamental Horticulture from Virginia Tech will work with a group of volunteers to dissect the root systems of trees in Bryan Park planted using the old technique. Participants will then learn methods used to save these trees.

The workshop will be held starting at 8:30am on Saturday, November 1, with a rain date of November 8; it will continue well into the afternoon.

This free opportunity to learn how to identify and possibly correct problems with trees in your yard, neighborhood or community is free and open to the public. Participants should meet at the Bryan Park entrance near the Gatekeeper’s House at 8:30am.

Contact the Friends of Bryan Park at reBryanPark@aol.com if you would like to work beside Joel Koci as a volunteer.
