A statement from the PD: Petersburg Police this afternoon made an arrest of a suspect following an attempted burglary of a home in the 1500 block of Montpelier Street. This incident occurred several hours after a residential robbery had occurred in the 1600 block of Brandon Avenue, in which a knife-wielding suspect forced his way into a home and demanded money.

Detectives are not releasing suspect information as they are still investigating possible connections the arrested subject may have to this morning’s robbery and to three previous residential robberies by a knife-wielding suspect since September.

In each of the robberies a suspect approached a female in the morning or evening hours as she was approaching or leaving her residence, then produced a knife and demanded money. One incident also involved a sexual assault. Incidents occurred in the 100 block of Ivy Lane on September 27th, the 1600 block of South Sycamore Street on September 30th, and the 1900 block of Berkeley Avenue on October 12th.

Although Petersburg Police are optimistic about today’s arrest, they want to remind residents to always use caution when their personal safety is involved. “We cannot be certain that the same suspect committed all the offenses, and we advise everyone to be aware of their surroundings at all times, even when leaving or arriving at their own homes,” said Major Lewis W. James, the Deputy Chief of Investigations for the Petersburg Police. “Take a moment and look outside before leaving home, and look around when returning home. If you see anything suspicious, turn around and immediately call 911.”

Petersburg Police Chief John Dixon stated that he will continue the increased police presence he has directed into the area, including both undercover detectives and uniformed officers in marked cars.
