Maymont will celebrate the completion of the Robert M. Freeman Bald Eagle Habitat & Raptor Valley, featuring bald eagles and other birds of prey, during a public grand opening Sat., Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m., featuring special guests including the Boy Scouts Honor Guard who will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The festivities will continue with raptor programs presented by Maymont’s environmental educators, native plant tours, storytelling, hands-on displays, activities and more throughout the day.
The exhibit is the first new animal habitat at Maymont since the Robins Nature & Visitor Center was completed in November 1999. It features an open-air habitat for bald eagles and six smaller aviaries for red-tailed hawk, Cooper’s hawk, barred owl, great horned owl, black vulture and red-shouldered hawk.

The Bald Eagle Habitat & Raptor Valley are located closest to Maymont’s Children’s Farm entrance at Spottswood Road and Shirley Lane. Free parking is available at this entrance as well as at Dogwood Dell, the Nature & Visitor Center and the Hampton Street entrance.

Admission to the grand opening is free, but donations are welcome. For more information, visit www.maymont.org or call (804) 358-7166, ext. 310.
