The Times-Dispatch reports on the Bright Beginnings program, and some of its beneficiaries from North Richmond:

Children from the North Richmond YMCA received a treat for back to school yesterday — a free pair of shoes.

More than 100 children were fitted with new shoes at Saxon Shoes at Short Pump Town Center as part of the Richmond and Petersburg area YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program.

A sales associate brought out about five pair for each child. Together they worked to find one that fit and the child liked.

“It’s very important that they fit so they can go back to school and maybe feel a bit better because they have new shoes,” said Gary Weiner, owner and president of Saxon Shoes.

The children visiting Saxon Shoes were from the preschool and after-school programs at the North Richmond YMCA. Overall, about 2,400 children from the Greater Richmond area participate in the Bright Beginnings program for needy elementary schoolers.
