The Petersburg Library Foundation has begun its capital raising campaign for the new headquarters of the Petersburg Public Library System. An interesting feature on PLF’s related website is a link to take a virtual tour.

As a part of its campaign raising efforts, today the Petersburg Library Foundation announced that it has received a $1,000 donation from Quota International of Petersburg toward the building of a new Petersburg Public Library headquarters.

Quota International of Petersburg is a women’s service organization, chartered in Petersburg in 1953. Proceeds from the club’s fundraisers have been used to help the hearing impaired, for scholarships, community service and disadvantaged women and children.

However, after more than half a century of service to the city and surrounding localities, the club has recently voted to dissolve and disburse its remaining funds. Club members identified the Petersburg Library Foundation’s Capital Campaign to benefit from this dissolution.

“This generous gift from the Quota club is just one example of the tremendous support that we’ve seen from the community regarding the new library,” said Robert C. “Bob” Walker, President, Petersburg Library Foundation. “The Capital Campaign has only just gotten underway, but it’s early donations like these that help demonstrate to the community the commitment that is being put forth toward this project and that set an example that hopefully other organizations, businesses and individuals will follow.”

The Petersburg Library Foundation had previously determined that a new, larger library facility must be secured in order to meet the needs of the city’s growing, diverse population and the challenges that come with increased program demands and new technologies. The Foundation has contracted with Enteros Design, P.C. of Petersburg to design the new facility. It will be located at the corner of Washington and Market streets at the former site of Crossroad Motors (formerly Petersburg Motors). It is anticipated that construction will begin this fall and last approximately 18-24 months. A capital campaign has been organized to help raise needed funds toward the project.

The new library will provide much needed additional parking; more efficient heating, cooling and lighting; increased security; and larger spaces for collections, seating, computers, children’s programs, public meeting rooms and community resources. Additionally, it was determined that with a new library facility, an enhanced partnership should and could be fostered between the Petersburg Public Library and the Petersburg Public School System, as well as the civilian and military personnel at Ft. Lee.

The generous gift from Quota International of Petersburg will help make the Foundation’s vision for the library a reality.
