DowntownShortPump.com, then Amanda Meadows from Channel 6, among others. Our man Justin is scheduled to go down Friday at 2:10pm

The event is open to the public, and we encourage you to head down to the SunTrust building and watch all the fun.

Below are tips to make the most out of the event:

Parking: There are several public parking decks around the SunTrust Center (919 E. Main Street, Richmond, VA 23219). The building is located between 9th and 10th streets (for a map of public parking decks, please click here). Since you’ll be parking downtown on a week day, please arrive early and be prepared to walk a few blocks to the rappel site.

Watching: The best spot for viewing the rappel site is on the sidewalk across the street from the SunTrust Center on the Cary Street side, however rappellers can be seen from MANY places in the city. We’ll have a sound system at the bottom of the building to announce your name as you come over the edge. ONLY registered rappellers are permitted in the staging area and on the roof.

Richmond is about to go Over the Edge

Because we’re so very, very nice, RVANews is allowing Justin Smith, 30, to rappel down 25 stories in our name. Justin is a stalwart supporter of his family, church, and community, not to mention a rugby player, so we couldn’t think of a better guy! Justin will be taking part in the Over the Edge event this Thursday and Friday.

Using the SunTrust Center building in Downtown Richmond, Justin and other wall-crawlers will rappel down 25 stories, all for the sake of charity. Called the “tallest fundraiser” in Virginia, Special Olympics Virginia holds the annual event to raise money to support thousands of Virginians with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of events for both children and adults.

If channeling your inner Evil Knievel is your thing, then you simply raise $1,000. If you reach that amount, you get to rappel. RVANews held a contest in which Richmond could nominate who would rappel down the SunTrust Center building in our name. Justin won the honor, and now it’s time for him to verify that he is, in fact, a “daredevil,” as one co-worker described him.

There are 80 rappellers this year, who raised a total of $63,000 thus far. $75,000 is this year’s goal.

Thursday’s portion of the event will feature local celebrities. Nutzy will go first at 1:30pm, followed by Andrew Williams from Sports Radio 910, Trevor Dickerson from DowntownShortPump.com, then Amanda Meadows from Channel 6, among others. Our man Justin is scheduled to go down Friday at 2:10pm
