An investigation is underway following shots fired in the Canterbury Square apartments. On Thursday, September 8, 2011, at approximately 8:40, Henrico Police responded to the 900 block of Pump Road in reference to a suicidal man. Officers approached the residence and attempted to make contact with the occupant without success.

A short time later while officers were still on the scene, a taxi cab approached with the male subject, later identified as Gregory McCracken, age 49, as a passenger. As officers approached the taxi, McCracken brandished a small handgun and shot himself in an attempt to commit suicide.

McCracken then raised the weapon toward the officers. One officer fired shots into the taxi striking McCracken in the torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The taxi driver was able to exit the vehicle unharmed.
