During the James River Outdoor Coalition meeting Tuesday, members discussed the granite and steel structure at the 21st Street area off Riverside Drive at the tower to the Southside rocks at Belle Isle

The JROC members – who often carry out volunteer projects like this in the James River Park System – want to knock down the wall, at least to a level where the park abusers cannot hide from view from the street or the dwellings across the street. This topic was brought up this past March, but was not high on the priority list to prepare the park for the summer. Now that fall is almost here, these projects can get done.

Currently, the structure only protects the Port-O-John that is tucked inside one wall. The inside of the wall is often covered in graffiti and is “drawing too many unsavory characters” — as one member put it in March. Riff-raff tends to duck around the wall.  Eliminating it could make the area safer and will also open up the view of the river from that knoll a little more.
