The Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods and the Sons of Confederate Veterans can relax, Virginia Commonwealth University’s plans to renovate a downtown parking lot it recently purchased have been put on hold.

On Monday June 3 about a dozen protesters gathered on East Broad Street to put pressure on VCU to not repave the lot, which is located on or near land that is purported to have been a burial ground for slaves and free blacks 200 years ago. The exact location of the graves isn’t known for certain, because there have been so many changes made in the area over the years, including the construction of Interstate 95. Soon ACORN and the Sons weighed in on the side of the protesters.

Now VCU has wisely decided to allow for more study of the situation before going ahead with its renovations plans.
