5 Things

I don’t know about you, but I’m quite through with hurricanes. If you’re reading this you obviously have power. If you’re not reading this, however, you’re actually STILL READING THIS (I just blew your mind!). I’ve got 5 Things to help set us straight after Irene’s winds bent us out of shape.

So Irene has come and gone like the sassy bitch that she was. Hopefully, most of you weren’t too negatively affected by her. Even if she didn’t leave you damaged and without electricity, her presence has certainly made us feel a bit…unnerved. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to a weekend that’s free from 50mph gusts of wind and sideways rain. I left a voicemail on the Internet’s phone asking what cool people should do. Below you’ll find what it told me.

1. Rocketts Red Glare Labor Day Concert & Fireworks

Fire! It works! Wait. That’s not right (it’s a compound word, Nathan…c’mon!) Fireworks! Who doesn’t love ‘em? We had quite the show this 4th of July, so why not keep the party going. To celebrate Labor Day, Rockett’s Landing will host a concert and fireworks program. You can get your classical on with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, who will also perform during the fireworks display, doing a rendition of this song.

Kidding! They’ll do a cover of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”. Bitchin’!

  • Mon., Sep. 5 • Music at 7:30pm, fireworks after dark
  • 211 Rocketts Way, Richmond, VA
  • FREE

2. End of Summer Pool Party

I don’t know about you, but I’m sure as scatological discharge ready for summer to be over. I do like hot weather, but fall means that I can wear WAY more awesome clothes to impress the ladies (not really…forever alone). But before the Hurricane season blows summer away, it’s time for one last pool party to end things on a posi note. The fine and erudite folks at Spacebomb have gotten together with Rumors Boutique to put together an End of Summer Pool Party. Get to Rumors by 9pm to take advantage of a free bus ride to the PAH-tay!

  • Sat., Sep. 3 • 8:30pm – 11pm
  • 6423 Glyndon Lane
  • $5 donation to get in, $2 donation for beer/sangria

3. The Richmond Burlesque Revue presents: Work It, Girl!

Now, we’ve been through this whole “is burlesque stripping?” deal before. Let me set the record straight, folks. A burlesque show is NOT the typical strip club event (trust me, I know!). Burlesque is one of the last live forms of entertainment amid our current technological landscape, and Richmond is the epicenter (too soon?) of the burlesque art. This Saturday, head to Gallery5 to experience something that is most refreshingly and undeniably AWESOME!

  • Sat., Sep. 3 • 8pm – 11pm
  • Gallery5, 200 W. Marshall Street
  • $12

4. No BS! Brass Band

Speaking of being undeniably awesome, the No BS! Brass Band has not one, but TWO (2) live performances that are completely and utterly FREE! They’re taking part in the 2nd Annual Week-long Celebration at Ballicecaux. On Saturday they play at 10:30pm and on Sunday at 9:30pm. C’mon, bro, get off your duff and go have some f-ing FUN!!!!! This band rocks so hard even geologists like them. GEOLOGISTS!!!!

Don’t believe me? Fine. Drink this in:

  • Sat., Sep. 3 & Sun., Sep. 4 • 10:30pm & 9:30pm, respectively
  • Balliceaux, 203 N. Lombardy
  • FREE

5. South of the James Market

I didn’t make it to the market last Saturday, and I’m betting many of you didn’t either being that Irene was approaching. A reliable source indicates that Victory Farms packed up early because of the gusting winds. I think it’s safe to assume that vendors at the South of the James market REALLY depend on a good turnout to support themselves. So, here’s what I propose: we all go and have an awesome time this Saturday morning and show the vendors (and each other) some love. Whuddya say???

  • Sat., Sep. 3 • 8am – 12pm
  • New Kent Rd and West 42nd Street, Richmond VA 23225
  • FREE to attend, prices of goods will vary
