A body was found in the canal along Dock Street beside the CSX Viaduct and the Virginia Capital Trail, just west of Great Shiplock Park in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom.

UPDATE: On Monday, Richmond police identified the man as Michael K. Roberts, 54, of Church Hill. Investigators did not suspect foul play, but were waiting on the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine cause of death. His name was added to the James River Deaths page.

On Saturday, Lt. Shawn Jones of the Richmond Fire Department described the body to the Richmond Times-Dispatch as that of an elderly black man. See the video and article from NBC12’s Ben Garbarek:

A body was found face-down in the Kanawha Canal in Shockoe Bottom. It was discovered around 11 a.m. Saturday morning near the intersection of 21st and Dock Street.

Two people vacationing in Richmond found the body as they were walking down a path along the canal.

Firefighters say there doesn’t appear to be any sign of trauma on the victim’s body. Now investigators are trying to figure out how this man ended up in the water.
