Taylor Jasper Calder of Henrico County, Va., is one of six winners of the Dominion Memorial Scholarship Program. Calder, son of Corey and Debbie Calder, will receive up to $5,000 for the 2011-2012 academic year. The scholarship is renewable for an additional three years.

Calder graduated from the Center for Information Technology at Deep Run High School. He plans to attend Virginia Tech in the fall to study mechanical engineering. He was selected from among 196 applicants from 13 states.

Now in its fourth year, the scholarship fund was established in memory of Matthew Gwaltney, Rachael Hill and Nicole White – students with close ties to Dominion who were killed in the April 16, 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. The scholarships are awarded to the children or grandchildren of Dominion employees. Calder is the grandson of Thomas P. Duell, who retired from the Line Construction department after 39 years of service.

“Taylor was selected based on academic performance, community service and leadership,” said Robert M. Blue, senior vice president-Law, Public Policy & Environment. “He has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in these areas. Matthew, Rachael and Nicole were known for these traits, and we are confident Taylor will honor their memories through his continued success.”

Calder serves on the Junior Board of Freedom House, collecting donations to support the homeless and working poor; volunteers at a retirement home, tutoring programs and an electronics recycling program; and is a member of the robotics team at Deep Run High School, which has won the regional competition for the past three years, and were semi-finalists at the World Championship.
