Many believe that the Canal Walk’s future depends on the Reynold’s Metal development, but what about the old days when we all fought over the murals that used to decorate the walls of the Floodwall?

CBS6’s Mark Holmberg addressed the Canal Walk:

A dozen hot summers ago, they were the talk of the town. Now they’re basically falling down – not that many have noticed.

When the city prepared to open the Canal Walk in 1999, it commissioned 13 huge murals with 29 images to celebrate Richmond’s incredible history – and to cover up that ugly floodwall.

Those were much better economic times. And there was hope that the Canal Walk would be a big draw, like San Antonio’s River Walk.

And while high-rise condos have gone up between the canal and the mighty James River, the Canal Walk still hasn’t come to life.
