Did you miss the first innertube trip down the James, courtesy of the James River Park System? This Saturday, the trip is from the Z-Dam to the Wetlands.

“The best way to see the river on a summer afternoon may be from the river,” according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Katherine Calos, who wrote about the first innertube float offered by the James River Park this past Saturday:

The James River Park System introduced the joy of floating [Saturday] to a group that included visitors from Scotland, local families, couples and anyone else who wanted a guide to show the way from Cooper’s Island just west of the Boulevard Bridge to the park headquarters at Reedy Creek.

Nathan Burrell, trails manager for the city park, helped everyone pick lifejackets and inner tubes. Smaller tubes are more maneuverable, he said. Larger tubes are more stable.

The group hiked upstream to the put-in point, carrying their tubes. Beneath the bridge, the path veered into the river on an underwater sidewalk — in reality the cover for a sewage-overflow pipe, but it was flat and concrete and led to the island.

Meet in the Reedy Creek visitor center parking lot at 2 p.m. Saturday, but you must make reservations by calling 646-8911. The float should be over by 5 p.m. and there is a $5 fee.
