There may be a copperhead snake roaming around Pony Pasture Rapids, according to the park manager, Ralph White.  We posted a couple of weeks ago, it is rare on the James River to encounter poisonous snakes.

From the Friends of the James River Park Facebook page:

Ralph White: There might be a copperhead at Pony Pasture, but brown water snakes are mistaken for them. A dead water snake was found 3 days ago, likely dumped, in the parking lot @ Tredegar St. Large females come ashore now to give birth. They also sunbathe on the river rocks to hasten natal development. Copperheads are the 2nd least dangerous poisonous snake in N. America. No one has ever died from its bite.
