The Friends of the James River Park held their annual picnic on Sunday to the sounds of mountain music, tastes of plentiful potlock dishes, fun among friends and even learned a little something about sturgeon.

Casey Cockerham of Peak Experiences and Maureen Egan, president of Friends of James River ParkThe picnic was well-attended, with more than 75 people stopping by Shelter #1 at Forest Hill Park. Casey Cockerham of Peak Experiences was on hand to accept the River Heroes award from the FOJRP and The Boathouse. The James River Ramblers brought some lively old time mountain music (and a few fine flat footers).

Betsy Slade was honored by Friends of James River ParkMember Betsy Slade was honored as well. She was one of the top vote-getters in the River Heroes campaign, though she was technically ineligible since she is on the FOJRP board. She is very deserving of honor and seemed surprised to be honored.  See the River Lover profile she submitted to JRNH.

Anne Wright, Assistant Professor of Biology at Virginia Commonwealth University, lectured the crowd on the plight of the Atlantic Sturgeon. The James River plays a large role in the future of the huge fish, which continues to be a mystery to scientists as they try to help improve the conditions in the river to help the ancient fish spawn and thrive.

Friends of James River Park picnic at Forest Hill ParkThe picnic was originally planned for the Pump House, which is still cut off to through traffic by the road closure on Pump House Road and wasn’t expected to be ready in time after needing repairs to its roof, which have since been completed.
