You’ve been to Pony Pasture and wondered about the amazing looking house on the bluff across the James River haven’t you? It is now owned by the Science Museum of Virginia and has been renovated and available for tours.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch did a story on this in the Home section recently, and included several photos from within the historic home:

After sitting vacant for more than three years, the former home of Walter Rice, a Reynolds Metals Co. executive and former American ambassador to Australia, and his wife, Inger, has been renovated and is now available on a limited basis for corporate retreats and other private events.

It was built in the 1960s by famed West Coast architect Richard Neutra, who was known for his architectural designs that blurred the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.

The avant-garde layout of the Rice House led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 as the only International Style house in the Richmond area.

Tour details: Historic resources tours will be offered once a month. The first is scheduled for May 14. Tour groups are limited to 12 people, and reservations are required. Tours are $30 per person. Call the Valentine Richmond History Center at (804) 649-0711, ext. 301 or go to www.historicrichmondtours.com.
