Benjamin Johnson, Richmond’s director of Emergency Management, needs to go. Nothing less than immediate termination will do.
When Johnson signed on with the city 34 months ago, his contract included a $500 monthly allowance for the use of his personal car, plus a parking spot for said car. When he joined, due to the many glitches of Richmond government, he got the keys to a city vehicle as well.
Instead of choosing between a city car or his car and $500, Johnson took both. In total, Johnson stole $17,000 from the city by taking both the city’s car and $6,000 per year for car reimbursement. He flat out robbed every single taxpayer.
This situation was not rectified by Johnson coming to his senses and giving back his double compensation. Instead, the city auditor uncovered the dishonesty. Kudos, Umesh.
The city responded to the auditor’s finding with this press release…
We appreciate the City Auditor bringing this situation to our attention. We have responded to his letter and as of April 8, 2008, the vehicle in question has been returned to the City’s fleet for general usage.
Am I missing something? Where’s the outrage. Where’s the discipline. This is simply an unacceptable response.
Benjamin Johnson should be fired. Immediately. Then, the case should be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for grand theft charges. No less of a response is commensurate with the crime of a public servant greedily helping himself to taxpayer funds.
