Riverside Drive west of the Boulevard Bridge is a popular route for bikers, runners and some sightseers. That stretch of road is a continuation of the scenic byway and includes many attractive overlooks for the James River, including one near the intersection with Evelyn Byrd Road. From there you can see a tall pine tree that used to house a bald eagle pair, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Rex Springston:

Bald eagles are beautiful. They are also brutal. Two popular eagles abandoned their nest just west of the Boulevard Bridge in Richmond after attacks from other eagles. The Richmond birds, a young pair, first nested last year. The eggs apparently got cold and died.

Eagles are doing well in Richmond and the city is the only U.S. capital in the Lower 48 with bald eagles nesting within the city limits. Springston wrote in January about the pair returning to the James and in March a post on Another record year expected for bald eagles on the James.
