The Times-Dispatch had an article in yesterday’s paper about the USS Gravely, a newly commissioned destroyer named for Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., the first African American to command a U.S. Navy ship, among other notable accomplishments. He served from 1942 to 1980. Vice Admiral Gravely grew up in Fulton, and Admiral Gravely Boulevard his named for him.
