It was standing room only for a period of time as supporters of 7th District Congressman Eric Cantor gathered Tuesday night in the main ballroom of the Short Pump Hilton hotel, eagerly awaiting the election results of the Short Pump resident’s race.

47-year-old Cantor, positioned to possibly become the next House majority leader, defeated Democratic challenger Rick Waugh at the polls, 59% to 34%, respectively.

Cantor took the stage around 8:00 p.m., his family by his side, and addressed the crowd after the race was called in his favor.

“The vote today says ‘we want our country back, we want to see limited government, we want to see the spending stop and we want to see a return to delivering results,’” he said.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who also spoke at the event, said the night’s election results nationwide “speak very strongly” of the decisions of leaders in Washington over the past two years.

Cantor, currently the Minority Whip, could become Majority Leader in January.
