Three Richmond Community students named Gates Millennium Scholars
Congratulations guys! Three Richmond Community High School (RCHS) seniors have been named 2010 Gates Millennium Scholars. Three Richmond Community High School (RCHS) seniors have been named 2010 Gates Millennium Scholars. The award includes renewable college
scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate studies.The three RCHS seniors selected are Kalyne Coleman, Jasmine Frazier
and Chelsea Hopson. Coleman, who posted a 4.72 grade point average,
will attend the University of Pennsylvania. She has not declared a
major. Frazier graduates from RCHS with a 4.71 grade point average.
She will attend the University of Maryland in College Park and will
major in biology and pre-med. Hopson, who compiled a 4.85 grade point
average, is Richmond Community’s 2010 valedictorian. She will attend
Wake Forest University and study pre-med.The Gates Millennium Scholars program was started in 1999 with a $1
billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It is the
nation’s largest minority scholarship program. This year, 1,000
students representing 45 states, the District of Columbia and three
U.S. territories: American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia and
the U.S. Virgin Islands, were selected. Students must have a minimum
3.3 grade point average to be eligible for the scholarship.
