VCU is saluting esteemed jazz pianist and past VCU Jazz faculty Ellis Marsalis with an honorary doctorate at VCU’s Commencement this Saturday at 10 am. Marsalis worked at VCU from Fall of 1986 to Spring of 1989 as Commonwealth Professor and spent the last two years as Coordinator of Jazz Studies.

Director of Jazz Studies Antonio Garcia nominated him for the honorary degree and said, “I had noted that his career as a performer and mentor had inspired a renewed focus on jazz education worldwide, a focus he brought this past summer to The White House, where he instructed young musicians at the request of First Lady Michelle Obama. He has been a longtime, articulate spokesperson for the importance of jazz and jazz education in America.”

Though Marsalis is not speaking at the Commencement at the Richmond Coliseum, the event is free and open to the public until capacity is reached if you wish to attend.
