Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities will hold “In Honor of our Ancestors,” its Second Annual Black History Month Festival at the Randolph Community Center on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
This free family festival celebrates African-American heritage and will feature an appearance by Howard L. Baugh, one of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American military pilots, who flew with distinction during World War II. Local artist Jerome Jones Jr. will also be a guest at the festival and will exhibit and speak about his artwork.
Other activities will include a quilting exhibit by The Sisters of the Yam, an African-American quilting guild; African-American storytelling by Rita Johnson; martial arts demonstrations; and performances by the Powhatan Youth Singers, who sing oldies but goodies, by teen vocalist Kaila Valdez, and by the Randolph teen dance troupe, Off the Wall.
Vendors will offer Jamaican and traditional food and African-American crafts and gifts. A caricature artist will also be on hand.
