Virginia Commonwealth University junior guard Eric Maynor was named one of 16 finalists for the 2008 Bob Cousy Award today (Friday). The honor is given every year to the nation’s best point guard, and recent winners have included Jameer Nelson, Raymond Felton and Acie Law IV.

College basketball fans nationwide will have the opportunity to vote for Maynor or another candidate online at www.cousyaward.com. The top vote-getter from the on-line poll will receive the “Fan Vote”, representing one vote to be cast by the blue ribbon committee selecting the award’s winner.

Maynor, the Colonial Athletic Association’s Preseason Player of the Year, is averaging a team-best 18.0 points and 5.0 assists per game, as well as 3.9 rebounds. Maynor is also second on the team in steals, at 1.3 per game. He ranks second in the CAA in scoring and assists, as well as 3-point percentage (.440).

Behind Maynor, VCU is 15-5 overall and holds a one-game lead in the CAA standings with an 8-2 league mark.

Last season, Maynor ranked fourth nationally in assists (6.4 apg) and was immortalized in NCAA Tournament lore when his jumper with 1.8 seconds left gave the Rams a 79-77 victory over Duke.

The 16 finalists were chosen from a pool of over 60 top candidates from NCAA Division I, II and III institutions across the country.  The 2008 Finalists were selected by screening committees comprised of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) representing all three divisions of collegiate basketball.

Also among the 16 finalists are Tyrese Rice (Boston College, L.C. Bird HS) and Sean Singletary (University of Virginia).

The 2008 Bob Cousy Award recipient will be announced at the Final Four April 7, in San Antonio, Tex.b
