A little background on the Cannon Creek Greenway: Department of Parks & Rec has submitted a grant application to VDOT for the funds to construct a bicycle/pedestrian commuter trail. Council is looking to identify matching funds in the Capital Improvement Plan.

The Greenway’s “ten-foot wide bicycle and pedestrian trail, once completed, will be incorporated into the East Coast Greenway as it enters the northern portion of the City of Richmond, linking the Highland Park and Barton Heights communities to Shockoe Bottom, downtown Richmond and the Capital Trail along the James River.”

From the City Council agenda:

Res. No. 2009-R190

(Patrons: Vice-President Robertson, Mr. Hilbert, President Graziano, Mr. Conner and Mr. Jewell)

To support the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities’ grant application to the Virginia Department of Transportation for Transportation Enhancement grant funds for the construction of a bicycle and pedestrian commuter trail, family recreation and environmental education features, landscaping, and scenic beautification of the Cannon Creek Greenway; and to express the Council’s commitment to work cooperatively with the City
Administration.

There’s some video and a little bit of background on the Cannon Creek Greenway over on the Richmond City Council Reporter and Telegraph as well as the paper (PDF), if you’re into that sort of thing.

There are also a couple other Northside items on the agenda, mostly street closures.
