The two faces of the VCU women’s basketball team were in the spotlight once again as the Rams used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Bears of Morgan State University, 70-56, in the second game of the VCU SportsCenter Holiday Classic at the Siegel Center.

The Rams improved to 9-1 on the season, while Morgan State fell to 5-3 on the campaign.

Junior Quanitra “Q” Hollingsworth and senior Krystal Vaughn (Baltimore, Md.) combined for 34 points and 20 rebounds to lead the way, while Kita Waller (Gainsville, Ga.) was in double figures once again with 13 points.

For Hollingsworth, who finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds, it marks her 30th career double-double, which ties for the school record set by Beth Mollerup.

Junior Radoslava Bachvarova ignited the Rams on the offensive end early on as she drilled a jumper and a three-pointer in the first five minutes of action to stake VCU to an early 7-5 lead with 15:33 remaining in the first half.

After the Bears cut the lead to 9-8, Waller took over scoring the next eight points of the game and sparking a 15-1 run by the Black and Gold that gave the home team a 24-9 advantage with 9:51 to play. During that stretch, the Rams held Morgan State without a field goal for over five minutes.

It was a back and forth battle the rest of the half as Vaughn scored the last five points before the intermission to give VCU a 43-25 lead heading into the locker rooms.

In the second half the Bears made a small run as Phylicia Jones and Corin Adams knocked down consecutive three-pointers to cut the Rams lead to 66-52, with 2:37 left in the contest.

LaTonya Grady banked home two free-throws with under 30 seconds to cut the lead to 12 points, but a lay-up by freshman Ebony Patterson (Chesterfield, Va.) preserved the 14-point victory at 70-56.

The Rams are out to claim the VCU SportsCenter Holiday Classic Championship tonight (Friday) as they take on the Terriers of Boston University, who got by Georgia Southern in the first game. VCU and Boston University will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
